The Farm

Harden Family Farms is a regenerative, USDA certified organic farm in Westminster, Maryland

Our mission is to grow organic food, restore the land, and reconnect our community to the sources of its nourishment

Nestled between the Chesapeake Bay lowlands and the Blue Ridge Mountains, our farm sits on the ancient Piedmont Plateau, where fertile soils and natural springs have supported generations of Maryland farmers.

We believe the health of our farm begins underground. Our regenerative agriculture practices focus on building living soil through composting, crop rotation, and the use of organic matter such as mushroom compost and biochar. We minimize tillage to protect the soil food web and encourage the natural balance of bacteria, fungi, and earthworms. This approach improves water retention, reduces erosion, and sequesters carbon – helping to fight climate change from the ground up.

A Living System Rooted in Regeneration

Healthy soil means healthy plants, animals, and people. Our vegetables, herbs, and flowers are grown without chemical fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides – ensuring every harvest is pure, organic, and deeply flavorful. Visitors often tell us that the taste of our tomatoes, lettuce, and herbs reminds them of how food “used to taste” – because it’s grown the way nature intended.

Animals with Purpose and Personality

Our heritage livestock are an essential part of our ecosystem. We raise heritage chickens for colorful, nutrient-rich eggs, and Old English Southdown “Babydoll” sheep that graze peacefully in our pastures and orchards. Their gentle grazing naturally mows grass while fertilizing the soil, closing the loop in our regenerative system.

Our playful Nigerian Dwarf goats provide milk used in our handcrafted goat-milk soaps under our Farm Soapery brand, while our Italian honey bees pollinate our fields, fruit trees, and wildflowers. Every animal here has a role to play – enhancing biodiversity, supporting pollination, and maintaining the health of the land.

Growing Organic Fruits, Vegetables, and Herbs

Across our high tunnels and open fields, we cultivate a diverse mix of organic fruits and vegetables for local families, farmers markets, and restaurants. From heirloom tomatoes and sweet peppers to kale, spinach, cucumbers, garlic, and basil, every crop is grown with care and harvested at peak ripeness.

We also specialize in culinary and medicinal herbs, which we dry and blend for organic teas and spice mixes. These herbs are grown without synthetic inputs and processed in small batches to preserve their natural aroma and potency. Many of our customers enjoy these as part of our Farm Soapery Apothecary line – where the harvest becomes soaps, bath salts, candles, and teas that celebrate the connection between farm and wellness.

Community-Centered Farming

We believe small farms are the backbone of strong communities. In an age of industrial agriculture and global supply chains, local farms like ours restore something essential: connection. Our goal is to ensure that every neighbor knows where their food comes from, who grew it, and that it was raised ethically, locally, and sustainably.

At our roadside farmstand, customers pay what they can. We don’t believe organic food should be a luxury. Whether you’re a college student, a family on a budget, or a retiree living nearby, you deserve access to clean, healthy food grown without chemicals or exploitation. Those who can give a little extra help sustain this model and make it possible for others to enjoy the same bounty.

We also donate hundreds of pounds of fresh organic produce every year to community organizations, including the Maryland Food Hub, Westminster Rescue Mission, and Carroll Food Sunday. Through these partnerships, we extend the reach of our farm beyond our own tables – helping to feed our neighbors in need.

Farmers Markets and Local Roots

You can find Harden Family Farms at local farmers markets across Carroll County, including the Westminster Farmers Market and Sykesville Farmers Market. These markets allow us to share our organic vegetables, eggs, herbs, flowers, and Farm Soapery products directly with our community.

Each market day is a celebration – filled with conversation, recipe sharing, and the joy of seeing customers who return week after week. We love watching children meet our farmers, ask about our chickens, and learn that food doesn’t come from a factory but from the land just a few miles away. These moments remind us why we do what we do.

Honoring the Land’s History

We know we are only temporary stewards of this land. Generations of families have worked these fields before us, leaving behind stories and craftsmanship that endure. With great respect, we have restored and modernized the property’s historic outbuildings and the original 1890 German bank barn, a striking symbol of Maryland’s agricultural heritage.

The barn, with its hand-hewn beams and stone foundation, now serves as both a functional farm structure and a gathering place for community events. Our 1890 clapboard farmhouse has also been lovingly restored. During renovation, we discovered pages from a June 1905 issue of Vogue magazine tucked into the attic staircase – an evocative reminder of the people who once lived and dreamed here. We’ve kept those fragments as part of the farmhouse story, honoring the continuity between past and present.

Stewardship for the Future

Our philosophy is simple: the land doesn’t belong to us – it belongs to the generations who will come after. We are committed to leaving it healthier, more biodiverse, and more resilient than we found it. Every tree we plant, every soil amendment we add, and every educational program we host is part of a long-term vision for sustainable agriculture in Maryland.

We are proud to represent what a small, family-run organic farm can achieve when guided by values of stewardship, community, and generosity. Through regenerative farming, we heal the soil. Through community partnerships, we nourish our neighbors. And through the beauty of the land itself, we find purpose and inspiration every day.
